'N Requiem vir Ray Phiri

about

The track was recorded on the first of June, 2019. It began with a pair of cards drawn from the Corduroy Institute's own take on Oblique Strategies. The string player was told "Integrity." The man with the machines was told "Unimagine it." The music began with a Digitakt rhythm which employed some of the percussive factory presets on the device. The device was also processed slightly on the Pigtronix Philosopher King. The Bass VI complemented the rhythm quite well. Subsequent synth layers added a dry Waldorf Streichfett and an Arturia Microfreak processed by the Pigtronix pedal and the Paradox Effects Arquitecto. Finally, a Telecaster added some guitar lines on top.

Upon completion, the track was loosely referred to as "Afrosynth Gamelan" based on its textural character. For months, however, we struggled to find a place for it within the context of the album which was taking shape. In the end, it became one of two uncertain holdovers from the sessions.

As the material for the current release began to accumulate from dispirate sources, it became clear that this song had a place in this new context.
The title came from the inspirational Ray Phiri, the South African guitarist whose beautiful lines graced Paul Simon's 1986 album, Graceland. We hope you honor his memory just as strongly as we do.
